One phrase we hear a lot from families is my child doesn't do that at home. Children's behavior is influenced by the environment and people around them. The home and preschool environment are very different. At home, children are surrounded with personal items and their immediate family. Since toddlers and preschoolers are usually the youngest members of the family , they are center of attention when they are home. Preschool is a completely different world for them.
Once at school, children are suddenly surrounded by several other children their age. The toys aren't theirs, they belong to the group. They are not the only young child being cared for by the adults in their world. They have to share, wait their turn, learn to compromise and learn to empathize. They are suddenly, not the center of attention, but that is a good thing.
In order to grow into successful school age students, they will need these new skills they are learning in the preschool environment. Children learn so much more than ABC's at preschool. They are gaining the life skills they will need throughout their entire life.
